I scan all the book news press releases every day because I like to keep up with the book world, and I saw a press release about Scholastic News accepting applications for Kid Reporters. Jake is still too young, but I thought maybe one of your children might be interested. They are looking for kids ages 10-14 to be reporters for the 2011-12 school year. Scholastic accepts about 25 reporters each year, and the kids write news stories for Scholastic Kidspress and select Scholastic classroom magazines. They choose candidates based on writing skills, attention to detail, and interviewing skills. This would be awesome if your child is interested in writing.
- Applications must be in by October 11, 2011.
- Interested kids must submit a news article with no more than 400 words about their community, as well as a 250-word essay about why they want to be a Kid Reporter.
- Additional requirements include background info, a recent photograph, and ideas for future stories, and a Student Release form.

I really wish they had something like this when I was younger. I imagine the competition is fierce, but it would definitely be a great experience for any young wanna-be reporter. It looks like the kids cover a wide range of topics, from book and entertainment news to interviews with celebrities and even political figures. If anyone’s children apply, be sure to let me know how it goes! It would be exciting to know there is the Mama of a mini-celebrity reading my blog.
