When I first found out I was approved for the Heelys Campaign, I was pretty excited. I pictured myself rolling down the hill on my brand new wheeled shoes to pick Jacob up from the bus stop. Sure, I’d have to walk uphill the whole way home, but hey, at least I’d get some more exercise. I also imagined wheeling behind him while he rode his bike out in the cul-de-sac. I had grand ideas for me and my new Heelys.
Alas, it was never meant to be. I’ve been holding off on this review for weeks, trying to teach myself how to use these cool sneakers, but I’ve finally had to face the fact that I just do not have the balance or coordination to wear shoes with wheels. Before I get into my review, I want to note that this is not a negative review against Heelys, but rather against my abilities to do anything involving any sort of balancing.
The day my sneakers arrived, I waited for Jake to get home so I could show him how cool they were. We went outside, him with his skateboard and me with my Heelys. I walked down the hill (knowing I wasn’t nearly ready to ride down it quite yet) and out into the pavement on the street. I spent 15 minutes trying to figure out how to go and called it a day. After that I practiced inside, where there were more things to grab onto. I didn’t fall, but came close a few times. Once again, I called it a day.
This went on every day until, well, up until five minutes ago, when I finally admitted to myself that I really should have opted to get the shoes for my son instead. I don’t know what I was thinking. I’m 36 years old, and I’ve never been coordinated in my life. The only thing I can do that requires balance in ice-skating for some reason, and I can’t even do that very well.
I’ll be taking the wheels out and using the sneakers as plain old sneakers. Luckily, that’s really easy to do. The sneakers come with a handy little tool that pops the wheels out, and you can put a flat piece back in to turn them into regular sneakers. My Heelys had dual wheels, which I thought would make them easier. Kind of like roller-skates versus roller-blades. I had to hang on for dear life to my car to take this picture, although common sense dictated that I should have just taken them off and photographed them that way. Common sense is boring though.
For those with a stronger sense of balance than I have, Heelys come in a variety of fun colors and styles, and I think if you can figure out how to use them, they’re probably really fun to use. The sneakers themselves are comfortable and really cute. If you are planning on buying a pair or two, Heelys is throwing a Black Friday special. Between Nov 25-Nov 28, Buy any pair of Heelys, get the second pair for $25. Or buy a Nano, and get a pair of shoes for $25, and get free ground shipping on all orders!
Once again, I would just like to say that Heelys are really cool sneakers, and it is not their fault I am completely inept when it comes to using them. I plan to get a pair for Jacob at some point, because he thinks they’re pretty awesome.
Note- I received a free pair of Heelys for this review. My opinions are my own.
