Did you know that there are like a bazillion little plankton in just about every pond, lake and ocean around the world? Most kids think of Plankton as the sneaky little guy on Spongebob who is always trying to steal the secret formula for the Krabby Patty (I don’t blame him, I want to know what’s in that stuff too!), but with the GeoSafari Plankton Net, they’ll be able to get up close and personal with the organisms.

Like just about every other product from GeoSafari, the Plankton Net is simple in its design, yet really fun to play with. It’s so easy to use, just hold on to one of the three handles and swoop the net back and forth in the water. When you lift it upright, the water goes into a handy, clear collection chamber. Unscrew the net from the chamber and pop on the lid, and you can take the water home to look under a microscope, or just check it out right there at the lake.

The Geosafari Plankton Net comes with a laminated card that shows the different types of plankton found in various bodies of water, but kids aren’t limited to this specific lifeform. Use the net to discover all different types of floating plant bits and organisms found in your favorite lake. You can use the net in fresh or salt water. The net mesh is the perfect size for picking up the different organisms.

We took the net down to the lake in my development last weekend to try it out. I didn’t want Jake actually going too far into the water, especially since he was still wearing his sneakers, but we’ve had a lot of rain lately and the water was overflowing onto the “beach” area. I let him use it right at the entrance to the water, and he picked up a ton of different floaty bits. I love how the collection chamber kind of magnifies things to make it easier to see. I can’t wait to take him to the ocean this year so he can really give it a run for its money. I’m sure we’ll discover all sorts of awesome plankton then!
