Anyone who has ever spent even a small amount of time with a dog knows that they have an amazing capacity for love and understanding. They also have an incredible ability to soothe our pain simply by sitting next to us and allowing us to bury our faces in their soft fur. I remember when my grandmother died, my dog Cooper came over and rested his head on my shoulder out of the blue, just because he thought I needed a doggy hug. Countless studies have been done over the years to validate what dog people already know: dogs are very therapeutic.

Veterans returning from war zones deal with a lot of trauma related to what they went through overseas. Some are injured to the point of paralysis, while others suffer from PTSD that can be paralyzing itself in many ways. America’s VetDogs is an organization that works to pair up veterans with therapy dogs. It was founded by Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind, which has provided guide dogs and training at no cost to people who are blind or visually impaired since 1946.

In 2003, the Foundation recognized the need for guide dogs, service dogs, and mobility devices for the wounded veterans returning home from war, so they started America’s VetDogs. Since then, they’ve worked closely with the Department of Veterans Affairs and the military, and even received the Secretary of the Army Public Service Award for their work. They continue to provide service dogs to veterans free of charge.

Bil-Jac, one of the biggest names in dog treats, proudly partnered with America’s VetDogs to make treats that would benefit both the dogs and the cause. Their treats are made with real chicken as the first ingredient and contain no soy, gluten, or fillers. They also contain  linoleic acid to help support a healthy skin & coat. Bil-Jac understands the needs of veterans, the company was started by Bill & Jack Kelly after they returned home from WWII. Each bag of America’s VetDogs Treats provides funding to support the cause. Check out their website for a $0.50 off coupon to try out a bag.
