DVD Review: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season One Volume OneOkay, I am feeling a little old right now! Did you know the first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers released back in 1993? That was the year I graduated high school! We’re going on nearly 20 years here of evil-fighting team work! I did a lot of babysitting back then and still remember the first seasons and incarnation of the Power Rangers. Today, nearly two decades later, my own child watches all the different incarnations. He also owns the original Power Rangers movie. Since he’s such a fan, I thought it would be fun for him to see where it all started, with the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Season 1, Vol.1DVD Review: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Season One Volume One DVD.

The Start of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Phenomenon

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Season 1, Vol.1 features the very first 30 episodes of the hit show. After 10,000 years spent in imprisonment, the evil sorceress Rita Repulsa and herminions are freed when her dumpster on the moon is accidentally opened by astronauts on a space mission. 10,000 years gives you a lot of time to think about how you’re going to get revenge!   Filled with rage, Rita decides to conquer the nearest planet: Earth. Fortunately, her arch-nemesis,  Zordon, has managed to keep alert throughout all those years, and he’s ready to fight her again. With the help of his wisecracking robotic sidekick Alpha 5, Zordon recruits a team of five teenagers with attitude (Jason, Zack, Kimberly, Billy and Trini) to receive superpowers  so they can defend the Earth as the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Aided by giant robotic vehicles modeled after dinosaurs called Zords, the Power Rangers fight back against the evil alien hordes of Rita Repulsa.

Jacob has been watching the 3-DVD set since it arrived on our doorstep. While the hairstyles and clothes are a little different than today’s Power Ranger incarnations (well hello, 1990s hair, can’t say I’ve missed you!), the basic premise has remained the same since day one. Teamwork is the only way to defeat evil, and going off on your own to try to prove how great you are never works out well. The kitschy style of the monsters may be goofy, the lines a little cheesy at times, but the messages presented in Power Rangers is solid, making it a great choice for kids who love superhero shows.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Season 1, Vol.1 arrives on DVD on August 21, 2012, and will retail for $19.93 (get it, it’s the year it came out!). You can pick it up on Amazon for $14.99 though.
