It's that time again! Time to start thinking about what types of holiday gifts you'll be buying and exactly how you're going to afford them on a budget. I know so many people who rely on layaway, although I've never tried it in the past. This year, however, I'm thinking about trying it out. I've missed out on many gifts for Jacob in the past because I thought they'd still be in stock when I had the money ready to purchase them. Last year,for example, the Dr. Dreadful Zombie Lab ended up costing us more because we had to go through a third-party seller to get it. It was one of the top things on Jake's list! If I had just put it on layaway when I saw it, I could have saved a little money. Plus, things go on sale at different times during the holiday season, so using a free layaway plan like the one at Kmart can really help save money.
Benefits of Kmart Layaway
As you can see from the grid above, one of the nice things about Kmart layaway versus other big retailers is that they offer it year round. You can use it for everything from summer birthdays to fall anniversaries to winter holidays. I also love that you can shop online and add to your layaway that way. It's so much more convenient for those of us who spend half our lives on the computer! I'm thinking about adding this 32" Flat Screen TV to layaway, because I am probably the last person on earth without a flat screen and it's a really good price!
While the Kmart Layaway plan typically involves a $5 fee on 8-week contracts, now through 11/17/12, they will waive that fee. Plus, right now when you use the Kmart Layaway, you can enter the Kmart's Big Layaway Giveaway! Each week, you'll have a chance to win a payoff of your entire remaining balance. I could definitely use that, as the budget is really tight this year! There is one layaway giveaway per week at every participating store now through 11/17/12.
I can’t decide if this is an awesome event or not. I would love to pick out things I want going in the holiday season but I don’t really need anything I would put in that shop and would still need to pay until I won. For people who really can’t afford the items but are hoping for a win what happens if they get most of the way through paying but just can’t anymore and haven’t won. I think it would be better if they said one person who puts items on layaway will win each week and it would always be the first week that way they knew if they won and the rest who just needed to space out paying could do so when their first payment came due.
