I saved the best part of my summer reading list series for last! While the summer reading books for school-age kids was more for my son’s age group, and the middle grade list for my cousin’s age, the summer reading list for young adults is where I’ll be finding most of my own reading material! These are all books that I’m hoping to get a chance to read on the beach this summer. If I missed any, please let me know! I can never have enough books on my wish list.

Helen- the child of a mortal and a Greek god- has to find a way to lock the Greek gods back up on Mount Olympus without getting all the other Scions- and mortals!- killed in the process. Summer Reading List for Young Adults: Unnatural Creatures

Unnatural Creatures: Stories Selected by Neil GaimanSummer Reading List for Young Adults by Neil Gaiman – Unnatural Creatures is a collection of 16 short stories about the fantastical things that exist only in our minds. If it exists in the mind of Neil Gaiman, you know it has to be fantastical! He’s one of my all-time favorite authors. Along with Neil’s work, you’ll also find writings by E. Nesbit, Diana Wynne Jones, Gahan Wilson and others. Sales from this book benefit an organization that supports students in their creative writing endeavors.

Summer Reading: In the After

In the AfterSummer Reading List for Young Adults by Demitria Lunetta – The Earth has been taken over by “Them.’ No one knows where they came from, but they are quickly wiping out humanity. Yet Amy soon discovers that being rescued doesn’t mean you’re safe!

Summer Reading: Chaos of Stars
The Chaos of StarsSummer Reading List for Young Adults by Kiersten White- I am so excited about this book and can’t wait to read it! I loved White’s Paranormalcy series and was really sad when it ended. In Choas of Stars, Isadora comes from a royally screwy family. She’s the daughter of Egyptian gods Isis and Osiris, so you know that can’t lead to any sort of normal life! Isadora is sick of her crazy relatives, so she jumps on the chance to move to California with her brother. Unfortunately, life there isn’t any less crazy!

chosen at nightfall
Chosen at Nightfall (Shadow Falls)Summer Reading List for Young Adults by C.C. Hunter- This is the only one on my summer reading list that I’ve actually had a chance to read so far. It’s the conclusion to C. C. Hunter’s awesome Shadow Falls series. Well, at least it’s the conclusion for now. Hopefully we’ll see our beloved characters again someday! Kylie, after discovering what she truly is, still needs to work out where she goes from there. She also needs to decide what she going to do about her love life! It was a great conclusion to the series.

Far Far Away
Far Far AwaySummer Reading List for Young Adults by Tom McNeal – Jeremy Johnson Johnson (that’s not a typo, he has the same last name twice) hears voices. The people of Never Better don’t exactly like that, so they treat him like a crazy outsider. Jeremy’s mom leaves him and his father becomes a recluse, so it’s up to Jeremy to take care of the family. Thankfully, he has the voice of Jacob Grimm- yes, THE Jacob Grimm of the Brothers Grimm- helping him out and keeping him safe from evil. When Ginger Boultinghouse takes an interest in Jeremy (and his unique abilities), a grim chain of events is put into motion. Unfortunately, as we all know from the true Grimm fairy tales, happy endings are not easy to come by!

Summer Reading: Monument 14
Monument 14Summer Reading List for Young Adults by Emmy Laybourne -Fourteen kids are locked in a superstore while the world outside them goes insane. Between monster hailstorms, chemical weapon spills and more, life as they know it is over. Inside the superstore, though, they manage to build a refuge for themselves. Will they be able to survive? She lives a quiet life, always wondering why she lived when her family perished, but always safe under the shadow of the Icon. Together, they must join the pieces of their pasts and save the future.

code-orange

Code OrangeSummer Reading List for Young Adults by Caroline B. Cooney- Mitty Blake loves New York City, and even after 9/11 he’s always felt safe. He’s a pretty laid-back kid, so he doesn’t even fret when he realizes he’s late getting started on his major bio paper. He thinks it’s a stroke of good luck when he finds medical books in his family’s weekend house that fit his paper’s theme. That is until he finds scabs in the pages- yes, scabs! Then it’s no longer about getting a good grade, it’s about surviving! I’m really looking forward to this one, I love books about bioterrorism!

Summer Reading: Some Quiet Place
Some Quiet PlaceSummer Reading List for Young Adults by Kelsey Sutton- Elizabeth Caldwell doesn’t feel emotions. Instead, they appear to her in human form. While they all hang around Elizabeth every day, they’ve given up on trying to actually touch her. Except Fear, who is obsessed with finding the answer to how Elizabeth got this way. Somehow, the key is in Elizabeth’s paintings of her dreams. Will they be able to find the answer before the shadowy menace stalking her claims her?
The following summer reading list books will be available in August.

smashed
SmashedSummer Reading List for Young Adults by Lisa Luedeke- Katie Martin wants to leave her small-town loneliness behind forever, and her skills in field hockey could be her ticket out. Unfortunately, she has a bit of a drinking problem. Perhaps more than just a bit. Alec, the most popular guy in school, is also a huge bully. Still, when he pours on the charm, Katie gives him a chance. Big mistake. Rain, alcohol and a bully just don’t mix. When Katie makes a huge mistake, she finds herself indebted to Alec, and not in a good way.

Slayers

SlayersSummer Reading List for Young Adults by C.J. Hill- Tori is a slayer- a descendent from knights that once fought dragons. While the dragons were killed off, they did manage to stow away a clutch of eggs. Now, the eggs are in the wrong hands. Tori and the other slayers have to stop them from hatching to save the world. I chose this one because while we see lots of vampires, werewolves, faeries and more, we rarely see dragon hunters these days!

Summer Reading: Doon

Doon Summer Reading List for Young Adults by Carey Corp- Veronica may or may not be going crazy. She’s pretty sure she’s not. Then again, she sees a blond boy who no one else seems to see! Her best friend Mackenna invites her to vacation in Scotland for the summer and Veronica jumps at the chance. Unfortunately, the blond boy in the kilt followed her there. Then the girls find a set of keys and letter from Mackenna’s aunt. They are transported to Doon, a fairy-tale land with a dark underbelly. Will they find love, or the end of their lives?

Summer Reading: Jumped In
Jumped InSummer Reading List for Young Adults by Patrick Flores-Scott- Sam is expert in the art of slacking, especially since no one at his new school gets his intense passion for the music of the Pacific Northwest—Nirvana, Hole, Sleater-Kinney. Then his English teacher begins a slam poetry unit and Sam gets paired up with the Luis, a scarred boy who is likely a gang member, or at least that’s what Sam thinks. Slacking is no longer an option, unless he wants to get destroyed by Luis! Sam narrates this tale of a differences, friendship, loss, and the power of words with his own raw voice interspersed with poetry.

Demonosity
DemonositySummer Reading List for Young Adults by Amanda Ashby- Popular girl, Celeste Gibson, just wants to hang out, wear her funky vintage clothes and take care of her father while finishing her junior year of high school. She never wanted to house the spirit of a 14th century night who is sworn to protect the Black Rose. Sadly, it’s not really her decision, as he moves in without an invitation. Now she has to train to fight demons everywhere…even at the mall! So much for high school being easy!
