To Who Ever This May Concern;

I wish I could tell you the contents of this book were purely fictional. That I, Adela Arthur, was just a normal sixteen year old from Portland and that dragons, giants, elves and mermaids were just myths. I wish these were legends shared from crazy old grandparents to crazy old grandparents around campfires. After all, that is what I used to believe.I never would have thought they lived on the other side of our mirrors in a world called Cielieu. But they do…I never would have thought there were humans, better known as Volsin that lived among them with the ability to create light from a single thought. But there are…I never would have thought I was one of them… But I am… I am the last Arthur and I was brought to the human world after a Volsin, filled with greed, began to strip the light from our kind.The human world was supposed to be a safe haven… but he’s found us and the only way to stop him is to go back to Cielieu and begin training as a student in the Elpida Castle of Light.Like I said I wish the contents of this book were purely fictional and not my life…

My thoughts on Adela Arthur

The story begins with Adela’s 16th birthday. You would think this would be a happy day. Most girls love turning 16 and look forward to their “sweet” party. Not Adela, though. For Adela, her birthday is a “dark day.” Rather than a joyous occasion, it marks the anniversary of the day she became an orphan. You can’t really blame her for waking up a bit on the cynical side! Her blind grandfather, though, wants her to celebrate, and does everything he can to make the day special.

Once at school, Adela has an odd episode following her insanely complex physics test (honestly, even a basic physics test would make me cry!). Everyone thinks she just had a panic attack. The principal (and mom to Adela’s best friend, Hector) seems to think otherwise. When Adela overhears a conversation between Principal Pelleas and her grandfather, she assumes they’re worried about her sanity and promises herself “no more weird.” Of course, as the reader, you know that they’re talking about something else entirely, you just don’t know what yet.

Unfortunately for Adela, “no more weird” just isn’t on the menu. A perfectly lovely day turns sour when Adela is paired up for a project with the bully Wilhelmina. That should be bad enough, right? Well, that’s nothing compared to the beast that magically appears from a broken mirror and accosts them in the library! It only gets weirder from there.

I loved Adela’s character! She is so funny, a little cynical, beautifully flawed yet perfectly delightful at the same time. She’s not a cookie-cutter character at all- a brilliantly drawn main character. Her grandfather is my second favorite character, but I can’t really tell you why because it would ruin the surprise! Let’s just say that nothing and no one in Adela’s life is who or what she thought they were.

Overall, I loved this story, and I’m really looking forward to seeing more of Adela. It was a fun book filled with vivid characters and a beautifully imagined world on the other side of the mirror.
