We all know how important it is to get aerobic exercise, right? It gets your heart pumping and keeps you in shape. Some of us, though, aren’t exactly fond of traditional aerobic exercise. I’m not a runner. Well, that’s not true. I once ran a whole block to escape a bee. I would probably run a mile to escape a clown. Other than that, though, running is not on my agenda.

Stop Running! Easy and Fun Aerobic Exercises For Non-Runners

Fortunately, there are so many other types of aerobic exercise that work just as well! Take a look at a few of my favorites.

Aerobic Exercises for Non-Runners

Walking-  Walking is a great form of low-impact aerobic exercise for those who like to get out, see some scenery and explore the world. As long as you’re walking at a pace that gets your heart rate up, it counts. You can even do it on a treadmill, but really, where is the fun in walking in place? If I’m going to walk, I like to actually feel like I’m going somewhere! Walking down to my mailbox is a major trek. It’s only a half-mile away, but it’s all uphill on the way back!

Cycling– Riding a bike is another great way to explore new places and get in some aerobic exercise! If you’re a newbie  stick to level terrain and paths. If you’re experienced and looking for more thrills, try heading to some tougher terrain. Orbea Bikes make great bicycles for all-terrain! I remember when I was little; I used to ride my bike all over the place. I’m sad to admit that I haven’t ridden in a while. They say you can’t forget how. They’re wrong. I’m trying to learn again though!

Swimming- I’m not really a big fan of summer. It’s too hot and too bright! One thing I do love about it is swimming. Spending the day in the cool refreshing water makes summer so much more bearable. Even during the winter, I look forward to splashing around in an indoor pool when I get the chance. Swimming is a great aerobic exercise for people with aches and pains that make other forms of aerobics a little too intense.

Dancing- I can’t dance. I can hold my own in a mosh pit at a punk show, but when it comes to club music, I just don’t have what it takes. I’m fine with that. Moshing burns a ton of calories! Dancing is a great way to get your heart rate up. The good thing is, if you do it in the privacy of your own home, it doesn’t matter if you can dance! It just matters that you’re moving!

Jumping Rope- This was my favorite type of aerobic exercise when I was little. I recently tried doing it again and was surprised to find that I actually didn’t forget! Jumping rope is fun because it reminds you of simpler days. It’s great for your heart and body because you’re using all sorts of muscles at once.

Basically, anything that gets your body moving and your heart pumping counts as aerobic exercise. Just running around in the back yard with your kids counts too! The key is to find something that is fun so you know you will stick to it. Also, switch your routine frequently if you’re like me and tend to bore easily.
