Lays Do Us a Flavor

Some of the best Lay’s Potato Chip flavors have come from creativity in the kitchen. If no one ever thought to put sour cream on a potato, for example, would we have the delicious Sour Cream & Onion flavor? What if no one ever invented barbecue sauce? Not only would we be missing out on a delicious topping for chicken, but we wouldn’t have yummy BBQ chips! So it makes sense that Lay’s is asking consumers to dig into their own recipe collections to come up with the next big chip flavor.

A recipe born in the midst of a blizzard

I never really thought I was the creative cook type until I was stuck in a blizzard back in 1995. I was only 20 years old and up until that point, my cooking repertoire consisted of boiling noodles and throwing on sauce. I was living with my first husband and snowed in with two other military friends. Interestingly, one became my second husband, but that’s a whole different story!

Anyway, there we were, with several feet of snow on the ground and very little food in sight. We lived across the street from a convenient store. I geared up and took off in search of food. When I got there, all I could find was a box of macaroni, a brick of cream cheese and a bag of cheddar cheese. Seriously, the place was pretty much picked over. I figured that was enough to make Mac & Cheese! I went back across the street (it took me half an hour to walk less than a quarter of a mile!) and got to work.

We didn’t have access to the internet at that time. Computers really weren’t affordable to Navy families with spouses still in A-School. I didn’t even have a cook book handy. I just sort of winged it. I cooked the macaroni, then threw everything into a casserole dish and tossed it in the oven. It actually came out amazing! Ever since then, baked Mac & Cheese has been the one dish that I excel at.

Getting creative in the kitchen

Creative in the Kitchen

I’ve never been the best cook in the world. I never will be. However, I do have my creative moments. Like one night, I really wanted something chocolatey. My aunt had given me a recipe for saltine toffee, but I didn’t have enough chocolate chips. Instead, I combined chocolate chips with peanut butter chips. It came out awesome! My mom has become quite a creative cook since my grandmother passed away. She came up with the delicious Garlic Parmesan pasta that I think would make a great Lay’s Potato Chip flavor.

Lay’s Do Us a Flavor Contest

The great thing about potato chips is they’re just so versatile. So many recipes would translate into a great chip flavor. I’ve always been a fan of chocolate covered chips, so I think even sweet flavors would be perfect. There’s still time to enter the “Do Us a Flavor” contest! All you have to do is submit a flavor name, up to three ingredients for the flavor and which chip style you think it would work best for along with a brief description of the flavor. Hurry though, it ends on April 5, 2014. See rules here: https://www.dousaflavor.com/

What flavor would you invent? I’d love to hear about it!
