Want soft, kissable lips for your hot Valentine's Day date? Make your own Valentine's Day sugar lip scrub in just a few minutes with two ingredients (plus one optional ingredient)! You know how they say that the greeting card industry came up with Valentine’s Day to sell more cards? Well, I’m pretty sure the skincare industry had something to do with sticking it smack-dab in the middle of winter! Between alligator-dry legs and chapped lips, our skin needs a lot of love to get ready for a night of love, if you know what I mean (wink wink, nudge nudge). Everyone has their favorite lotions and creams for the dry legs part, so I’ll help you out with the crusty chapped lips!

I love sugar lip scrubs because they’re so easy to make. Mine is made with avocado oil and all-natural pure cane sugar, but you can go in a million other directions. I’ll give you some alternatives after my sugar lip scrub recipe.

This recipe makes enough to fill up a little food-grade treat container, which you can find at stores like Michaels (I got mine for $2.99 for 10 in the store, but I don’t see them in the online shop), Walmart or even the Dollar Tree. If you want to make more to give to friends or family, just multiply the recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons pure natural cane sugar (it says Morena Pure Cane Sugar, and the brand I used is Zulka, I found it in my grocery store)
  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil (if you don’t feel like buying a whole bottle of avo oil, you can use plain old extra virgin olive oil. Avo oil has SO many uses in beauty recipes, though, so just go get yourself a bottle!)
  • optional: ONE DROP of your favorite food-grade flavor oil (vanilla extract, coffee extract, etc, more on this below).

Directions:

First things first: I always use either a stainless steel or a glass mixing bowl. If you don’t have a glass bowl small enough, you can use a regular cereal bowl. Before I start, I throw a little rubbing alcohol in the bowl, swish it around, then use a clean paper towel to wipe it out. My mom used to make soap and body products professionally, so she taught me the important little things to avoid contaminating the heck out of your natural skincare products. I also do the same to my metal spoon, and I use separate measuring spoons for body product recipes.

Okay, so you have your ingredients and your clean supplies. You also have your little container. If you buy a food-grade container like the treat containers, you don’t really have to worry about sterilizing those. If you’re using something on hand, make sure it’s clean.

How to make it: Mix the sugar and the oil in the bowl, stirring gently until it’s mixed. You may notice that it is either not as oily as you’d like or not as sugary. You can add 1/4 teaspoon of either oil or sugar until it has the consistency you prefer. Once you’ve got it how you want it, just scoop it into your container. You may have a bit of overflow (I needed it to make prettier pictures), so go ahead and give it a try now! Store it in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Optional: If you really want to add flavor, go ahead and add one drop. Just a drop is enough. It’s not like you’re eating the stuff or even leaving it on your lips for more than a moment, so I skipped the flavor. The sugar is sweet enough. Please use food-grade flavor oils here and not essential oils (you don’t have enough carrier to pull it off, in my opinion). Vanilla extract is the most logical, since just about everyone has it. Use a dropper! If you don’t have a dropper, you can also dip a wooden toothpick it in, the stir that around in your sugar lip scrub. You MAY need to add a SMIDGE more sugar if you use the flavor, because it will loosen the mixture. Again, just add a pinch at a time.

How to use your sugar lip scrub

Take it out of the fridge a few minutes before you’re planning to use it, so it can warm up and loosen a bit. Scoop out a tiny bit (about the size of a pea) and gently rub it around on your lips. Use a light touch and circular motions on both your upper and lower lip, for about a minute. When you’re done, either rinse your face with warm water or use a soft wash cloth to gently wipe it away. Notice the key words here: light touch, gentle! You don’t want to overdo it and end up with raw, red lips! Finish up with your favorite lip balm. I prefer to do this about an hour before I put on makeup, that way it gives my lips a chance to absorb the balm.
