Lucy The Elephant- Margate, New Jersey

Lucy the Elephant is a site to see along the beach of Josephine Harron Park! Towering at over sixty-five feet tall (six stories), and weighing over ninety tons, you can’t miss this friendly elephant. Lucy is officially the oldest roadside attraction in America. Visitors can take an adventure up a huge spiral staircase inside the elephant (which is painted the same color inside as a real elephant’s stomach!) to the top of her back.  There you are treated with a full 360 view! If you are headed near the Jersey Shore, you have to add a trip to see Lucy to your list!

If you’re traveling cross country in the east of the US, then The Lost Sea Adventure should be on your list to stop, stretch your legs, and explore! Known for being the world’s largest underground lake, this is an unforgettable experience. You start with a short guided tour that is about three-quarters of a mile down through the caverns. Then you load onto a glass-bottomed boat for a full tour of the lake! I’ve toured many caverns, and this was very light that even a beginner could tour very easily, and young kids can easily enjoy this tour also. Caverns are also great because you can tour rain or shine!

Homer Simpson fans may think they have the market on this giant donut, but Randy’s Donuts is a living legend! This LA based donut shop was not only featured on the Simpsons, it’s been featured on shows and movies like The Big Bang Theory, Get Shorty, and in the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s music video “Californication.” This  LA donut shop is famous, and a super popular as a tourist destination! As for the quality of the donuts? Over on Yelp, people are raving about the apple, chocolate and maple donuts, though all of them seem pretty popular.

The World’s Largest Ball Of Twine-  Cawker City, Kansas

You can’t say the people of Kansas don’t know fun! You won’t EVER forget your stop at The World’s Largest Ball of Twine. A curly piece of twine is painted on the streets through the town where many of the small shops feature twine art dedicated to the over 5000-pound ball of sisal twine. Also stop at the Almost Done Inn, they regularly offer twine so guests can add to the giant ball of twine. If you can visit in August, you might get lucky enough to catch the annual Twine-athon festival where locals celebrate all things twine, pitch horseshoes, and pull up their classic cars. The fun just doesn’t stop at this quirky attraction.

The Enchanted Highway- Regent, North Dakota

Get ready for an adventure in roadside art! The Enchanted Highway is a 32 mile stretch of road complete with seven large sculptures. These sculptures include giant grasshoppers, oversized pheasants, a Tin family and more at each scenic stop. “Geese in Flight” holds the Guinness Book World Record for the largest scrap metal sculpture.  It’s not every day you have seven major roadside attractions all in one magical stretch of highway along Interstate 94 from Regent to Gladstone.

So have you ever been to the best roadside attractions in America? What attraction have you stopped for that should have made the list? Tell me down in the comments!
