Gwen Lawrence Fit Body Yoga DVD ReviewYears ago, before I got all out of shape, I used to love doing yoga. I was never much of a runner or aerobics person, but yoga always made me feel healthier and toned. I got out of the practice back before Jake was born, but with my current weight loss efforts, I thought it was time to get back into it. Gwen Lawrence Fit Body Yoga  from Gaiam features three 20-minute segments designed to focus on different parts of your body, including your upper body, your lower body, and your core.

I tried to convince Jake to do the first segment with me, and he actually did better than I did until he got bored (yoga is apparently not as fun for six-year old boys as it is for their mommies). The exercises are a mix of easy and challenging. For example, I totally rock downward facing dog, but when it comes to side plank, I fall over like a little like precariously stacked blocks. Some of the exercises were a little rough on my weak wrists too (I’m pretty sure I have carpal tunnel, but I don’t have time to actually get an official diagnosis on that). I think if I work on it for a bit, I’ll be able to do them with more ease.

The lower body workout also features some easy poses along with some that I just couldn’t figure out. The core workout was a little easier, as it had more poses with which I was already fairly familiar from my younger years. Still, I really learned that I need to get in better shape before I can even come close to being as flexible as Gwen Lawrence!  I did like that the video wasn’t too busy. It was just a spotlighted Gwen in a relatively dark room with her voice talking over soft music.

I think this DVD would be great for someone who already knows how to do at least basic yoga poses and it fairly flexible. Once I get closer to my weight loss goals and gain some flexibility, I’ll definitely be going back to it. The poses are fun, and you change positions often enough that it doesn’t get boring at all. I do think that it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor first if you have any type of shoulder or back problems though. That pretty much goes for any new exercise regimen.
