The Clever Detective Game Review+ $20 CreativeToyshop.com GC Giveaway

Please ignore Jake's chapped lips, he keeps licking them!

I try to keep an enormous selection of board games on hand for Jacob and I because there are only so many times you can play the same one over and over before you kind of want to bang your head against the wall. Right now, Jake is really into math. Where he gets that from, I have no idea. I’m lucky I can add 2+2! Seriously, I rock at English and the humanities, but put numbers in front of me and I get a little woozy. But as his mom, it’s my job to encourage Jake in his academic endeavors, so I try to find ways to make math more fun (mostly for my sake). CreativeToyshop.com was kind enough to send me the Clever Detective game to try out, and it’s definitely the most fun I’ve had with math since Kindergarten.

The game is super easy to get started with. Just punch out all the math questions and the numbers, stack the questions, lay out the numbers, and get started. Each player gets a card with a face on it. They take turns answering math questions, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, then checking the answer with a little red magnifying glass (the kind that reveals the secret answer). If they get it right, they find the number that matches the answer, flip it over, and pick the facial feature or accessory that matches the back. The game ends when one person fills in their person (although you could change this to be when everyone finishes, or any other variation). The combos make for some wacky faces! My girls always ended up with mustaches, and Jake’s boys had big, pretty lips and pearls!

There are countless variations on the final face, so the game doesn’t get old after five minutes. The Clever Detective was designed to link with the National Curriculum Math in the UK, so it’s based on actual educational resources. I had to help Jake a bit with the multiplication and division because he hasn’t gotten that far in school yet, but it gave him a good idea of how those concepts work. Like how 5×3 is really 5+5+5. We had a lot of fun with this game, so it will definitely be going on the “first choice” shelf!
