“Mind and body balance” may sound like a marketing buzz phrase du jour, but that doesn’t make it any less important to strive for. I’m not going to lie here, I’ve been neglecting both my mind and my body quite a bit lately. I’m trying to make (or get back to) healthier habits to change that. Like most people, I’m trying to do things like eat better, get more active and relax more often. These things are often a challenge for me because I’m a picky eater who works long hours and has a really hard time ever relaxing her mind. Rather than give up, I’m setting new rules for myself and redefining what it means to get active or relax.

Healthier Habits for a Healthier Mind & Body

Healthier eating when you’re as picky as a toddler

I’m actually doing pretty okay with this one! I have been eating better since my husband and I got back together. He actually enjoys cooking and prefers to eat healthier foods. Since my husband cooks things that I would never have thought to make for myself, I’ve made a new rule for myself. Basically, I force myself to try at least one new healthy food a week.  My husband made me chicken fajitas with peppers in them. I thought I’d have to pick out the peppers, but it turns out I actually liked them the way he made them. Had I not forced myself to try it, I never would have known that.

Redefine physical activity

Somehow, somewhere along the way throughout my life, I got it in my head that if I’m not doing some sort of extreme physical activity then I might as well not bother. Like the only things that count are things like running a marathon or doing an hour of aerobics every morning. I’ve decided to redefine physical activity. Stop thinking of it in terms of what others can do and start thinking about what I can do. I may not be able to hike the Appalachian trail, but I can walk around my relatively flat town with my son while he hunts for those insanely popular monsters. I’ve decided that any activity counts, and the more I do, the more I can do. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to run a marathon, but at least I’m getting more exercise overall.

Relaxation for the totally unrelaxed

Oh boy, this is the hardest of all! My mind never, ever, ever shuts up or shuts down. While many people turn to meditation for relaxing, it actually winds me up more. I get upset because I can’t clear my mind, the whole thing goes very badly. So instead of trying to fit into a cookie cutter idea of what “relaxation” should be, I do things that make ME happy. Watching a mindless TV show relaxes my mind far better than trying to think of an empty void. I read entertaining books that take me away from my own world, color in adult coloring books (and sometimes in children’s coloring books!), play video games. These are the things that relax me. They may not work for you. Maybe you can empty your mind and picture a vast abyss of nothingness. If so, by all means, go for it! Do what works for you, even if it’s not the “trendy” way to relax.

Taking my vitamins and supplements

One healthy habit that I’ve always been pretty good about remembering: taking my vitamins! I find that I’m more likely to remember to take it if it’s something that actually tastes good.

I choose Nature Made® Adult Gummies Multi for Her plus Omega-3s because I love the lemon, orange and strawberry flavors. They’re not too sour and have just the right amount of gumminess (yes, that is a thing, when you’re as picky as I am, everything is a thing!). I buy them at Walmart while I’m shopping for groceries and other household essentials. Since the prices are low every day, I don’t have to wait for a sale to stock up, so I never have to worry about running out.
