Memorial Day is a day set aside to honor the men and women who gave their lives fighting for the United States. I come from a huge military family, so it’s an important day to me. My second-to-youngest cousin is currently serving in the Marines. His two older brother and father were all in the Navy, as was my grandfather and my ex (Jake’s dad). We are fortunate that we never lost anyone to the wars, but so many other families out there have suffered a loss. Too many, actually.

For many, Memorial Day also signals the start of the summer. Since summer is a season of hope and rebirth, it seems appropriate that it would occur on a day of remembrance.
