Excerpt:

In 1979, I was born in a large hospital in the city with a completely different name than what I have now.  When my mother left the hospital, she had just turned 18.

My mom was desperate to make her relationship work with my biological father, but he couldn’t stay on the straight and narrow long enough to have my grandparents believe that I would be safe in his presence.

She tried convincing my grandmother that I would be better with her. But my grandma said to her, “Mi hija, if you must leave, know you won’t be taking your son to those parts of the city.  You both will end up dead.  It’s not safe, jumping around from place to place.  There is a war out there on those streets.  You’re not thinking!  If you leave, then know you won’t be taking your son with you.”

As a result, I spent more time with my grandmother and step-grandfather.  My biological mother tried to take me to the bad areas of the city and even contemplated moving me there with her.  One day she packed up me and all her belongings, vowing never to return.  I cried frantically in the car.

“God, I can’t do this to my son,” she cried out. “If I give him to my mother, just promise me that I will be giving him a better life than what I could give him.  I can’t risk his life while I try to get my life together.” As she was driving me away from my grandparents’ home, she continued praying, “Give me the strength to turn this car around and give him a fair chance at life.”

Then, slowly applying pressure to the breaks, she turned the car around and headed back to my grandmother’s house.
