Ever have a massive craving for something, but you don’t feel like going to the store to buy the ingredients to make it or spend hours looking for a good recipe online? That’s how I’ve felt about bread pudding. I’ve been craving it for months, which is funny because I’ve only had it maybe three times in my life. I tried finding a recipe for it, but as soon as I see an ingredient list with more than five things on it, my eyes glaze over and my mind goes completely blank. I swear, my fight or flight instincts are so out of whack that my sympathetic nervous system sees an ingredient list as a threat!
When I got an email from Red Velvet NYC asking if I wanted to try out one of their dessert kits, then I saw the Brioche Bread Pudding on the list, it was like kismet. I admit, I was a little intimidated by all the ingredients, but the fact that they are delivered right to my door made it a little less scary. Still, I read over the recipe on their website first and realized that it didn’t sound too hard.
Make Brioche Bread Pudding in Minutes with Red Velvet NYC
Yes, minutes! Well, aside from the baking part! So here’s how it works: you pick the dessert you want to make on the Red Velvet NYC website and they ship you every ingredient you need to create it, except for the eggs. Yep, even the cold stuff! My package came with the milk, cream, pat of butter and even a little vial with the vanilla! I assumed they left off the eggs because they would break in the mail, but it turns out it’s illegal to ship eggs in the US. Did you know that?
Once you have your package, you just follow the step-by-step instructions to make your dessert. For the brioche bread pudding, check out the entire recipe here. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be! All I had to do was cube the bread, then mix the custard ingredients in a medium bowl.
After that, I just had to layer the bittersweet chocolate chips and bread in my baking dish and pour the custard over top. Sprinkle with the rest of the outstanding chocolate, then pop it in the oven.
The waiting was the hardest part! It takes about 75 minutes to bake, and you do need to check it once to make sure all the custard is still covering the bread. Once I got it out of the oven, I could hardly wait to let it cool down before tasting it.
The result is a super delicious bread pudding that tastes a bit like my mom’s French toast, except thicker and with chocolate. I love my mom’s French toast, so that’s a good thing! This dessert is rich enough that you don’t need much to feel satisfied. There’s enough for at least eight people to have a good sized serving.
