Captain Marvel released into theaters right around the same time as Endgame (to me, less than two months earlier is “right around”). Since I don’t have a huge “going to the movies” budget, Jake and I could only see one of them, and we’ve been waiting for Endgame ever since Thanos snapped those ginormous fingers of his in Infinity War.
The problem? We really didn’t know much about Captain Marvel, so when she showed up on screen in the first few minutes of Endgame, we both asked each other “who is that???” While you don’t NEED to see Captain Marvel to figure out her role in Endgame, if you haven’t seen the final Avengers film yet I do recommend checking out the Brie Larson film first.
Captain Marvel Review
I’ll keep this brief, since I don’t want to give anything away to those left out there who either haven’t seen the movie or haven’t come across other spoiler-filled reviews. 😀 Let’s start with a quick synopsis.
The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Check out the trailer, then we’ll talk about my thoughts:
While reviews are extremely mixed (like, the most mixed I’ve ever seen for a Marvel movie), I personally really enjoyed the movie. I love the fact that it’s set in the 90s, especially since I became an adult in that decade! It reminded me of my formative years. I know some critics complained about the “nostalgic throw-back” feel to it (especially in terms of action sequences), but I thought that enhanced the overall fun factor of the movie.
I especially loved what they did with Samuel L. Jackson! Nick Fury couldn’t be played by anyone else at this point, and they somehow made him look flawlessly youthful as his younger self. Talk about sheer movie magic!
My favorite character, though, has to be Goose. Yep, the cat. Well, sort of a cat. I don’t want to give anything away, but he’s not exactly what he seems, as Nick Fury quickly finds out!
Brie Larson does a fantastic job of bringing Carol Danvers and all of her quirks to life. I’ve never been a fan of perfectly perfect and overly moralistic superheroes (DC’s Superman, I’m talking to you), so the fact that Captain Marvel is a bit flawed appeals to me and makes her a more realistic (and likable) hero.
Most of all, I love that Captain Marvel gives girls a chance to see themselves in superhero roles. While I feel that Stan Lee has always done a pretty good job at balancing out male and female superheroes (X-Men, while not part of the MCU, has multiple incredibly strong female superheroes), the MCU as a whole has focused more on male role models than female.
While it’s not one of my top 5 favorite Marvel flicks it’s definitely something I’ll watch again when I binge my way through the entire MCU (I’m waiting on Disney’s streaming service to come out, then I’ll subscribe for a month and watch them all in order).
The spectacular, 1990s-era Super Hero adventure, which electrified and inspired audiences worldwide and surpassed $1 billion in ticket sales, is available now on all formats, including Digital in HD and 4K Ultra HD, Movies Anywhere, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 4K Ultra HD.
Captain Marvel is loaded with fantastic bonus features! While they vary depending on which format you buy, for the most part expect to find:
- Movie with Intro
- Movie with Commentary
- Becoming a Super Hero
- Big Hero Moment
- The Origin of Nick Fury (my favorite feature!)
- The Dream Team
- The Skrulls and the Kree
- Hiss-terical Cat-titude
- Deleted Scenes
- Gag Reel (another favorite, I love bloopers!)
