As a society, we’re getting increasingly pickier about what we consider “good nutrition.” That’s a great thing! As long as we continue to demand high-quality and more wholesome food, the supply will change to reflect our needs. It is my hope that by the time my son has kids, healthy food will be the norm, instead of getting relegated to a small “specialty” section (with specialty prices to boot!) of the grocery store. We pet parents are often just as picky with our dog’s diets as we are with our own, and I’m already noticing the payoff in grocery store chains!
Did you know that you can get high-quality grain-free dog food at the same place you buy your own healthy food? True story! I can run right over to Shop-Rite and grab a bag of Supreme Source® dog (and cat) food while I shop for my own groceries. Thank goodness, too! During our 8-day power outage (I promise this is the last time I’ll mention it…maybe), it wasn’t just convenient to stop at Shop-Rite for my dog’s food, it was a downright necessity. All of the pet stores in my area lost power for days, and the roads to get to them were impassable, anyway. Good thing Freya was on the Supreme Source® 10-Day Pet Detox, right?
How did Freya’s Supreme Source 10-Day Pet Detox Go?
As you know if you read my first Supreme Source post, I’m doing the Supreme Source® 10-Day Pet Detox with Freya to give her diet a bit of an overhaul. To refresh your memory, she eats very well when it comes to her regular food, but we let too much slide with the treats. Even with a healthy diet, there’s always room for improvement! Supreme Source pet food isn’t just grain-free, it contains no artificial flavors or colors. It’s made with a healthy blend of fruits and veggies, as well as a quality protein source. We did the Supreme Source Grain Free Turkey Meal & Sweet Potato Dry Dog Food, but it comes in other recipes, including:
- Supreme Source Grain Free Pork, Peas & Wild Boar Dry Dog Food
- Supreme Source Grain Free Salmon Meal & Sweet Potato Dry Dog Food
- Supreme Source Grain Free Lamb Meal & Potato Dry Dog Food
The majority of the Detox took place during our power outage. It was crazy cold, and we were crazy stressed. We got an insane amount of snow! I took this picture before the power went out, and it continued snowing for a few hours after it was taken. Here it is, almost spring, and my yard looks like a winter wonderland on overdrive!
Between the cold outside and the chill indoors, Freya needed high-quality nutrition more than ever to give her the energy she needed to stay warm. As a Pharaoh Hound with very short fur, she’s very sensitive to cold. Keeping her warm was a top priority, and a feat made more challenging by the fact that she absolutely LOVES playing in the snow!
When she was done running around barking at snowflakes and helping us “shovel” by munching on fallen snow, we gave her plenty of snuggles in her little blanket nest to help her warm up.
Freya is a very high-energy dog, and our 10-Day Detox took place during a time that’s a little out of the ordinary for us (okay, a lot!), so I can’t tell you definitively if Supreme Source gave her more energy, or if she was just being more active to stay warm. I do truly believe that the food made a difference, though. It really helped that she actually loves the taste of it, so she ate her entire dinner, rather than leaving half of it behind. If you recall from my first post, I usually have to resort to trickery to convince Freya to eat plain kibble, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that wasn’t the case!

I just mentioned to a friend of mine that my husband and I are more careful about what we feed our dog than we are about what we eat ourselves. Our Winston is a five-pound Yorkie, so he can’t eat much. Therefore, it’s even more important that what we do feed him contains the very best nutrition.
Oh wow that was a lot of snow! It is pretty though! As all snow is until it gets dirty lol. What a time to be doing a detox too! I am glad to hear that Supreme Source is grain free! Awesome your dog took it so easily being plain kibble!
We don’t have pets but have considered getting a dog. It’s crazy to think that dog food hasn’t been up to par for so many years. I’m happy that companies are finally putting better ingredients into their dog food. They’re a part of our family too!
We treat our pets just like we do our children. It’s very important to us for the pet supply world to supply better products. Our pets are our family too.
We wouldn’t feed our kids or family crap food, so why would we feed our pets crap. You know? My cat has to be on a special diet. I make sure I always have her food stocked so we don’t run out. If we were to run out, it could be very bad for her.
I don’t think people realize how important it is the read the labels and to do their research before buying pet food. Over the years I have read some posts on how major marketed brands fail to use true healthy ingredients.
It is so true that the nutrition is the essential part of taking care of your dog. And I love to use products that are known to be good, that someone tried it and can guide me trough its benefits. I will try it for sure!
What a beauty! And I agree whole-heartedly! We feed our families the best quality food possible, so why not do the same for our furry friends?!
When I still had a dog I was SUPER choosy as well. Their nutrition really is important like how we put importance to ours. So thanks for these tips. It would help a lot of pet owners for sure!
Wow Freya is gorgeous! Right now, I am noticing my dog is having some trouble with the food he is on and has been on for years. I am going to be on the look out for this so he too can give a detox a try!
What a large amount of snow, we got it too, our only problem was that we have a little Doxie and we had to make paths for him so he could go outside. The snow was taller than him. LOL. I am going to check on this dog food. I love it’s grain free and our little guy is part of our family too so we are always watching for the best for him. Thanks for sharing.
