Strange & Weird Subscription Boxes

As usual, I have a few quick notes. First, when I say “weird,” I am NOT poking fun at anyone’s tastes. I’ve been an offbeat oddball my entire life and I’m very proud of it. Mundanity is so boring. I’ll take the bizarre, surreal, peculiar, and every other synonym for “strange” any day. 😀

1. Quirky Crate

Quirky Crate is kind of what inspired me to write about weird subscription boxes in the first place (well that, and it came up as a keyword when I was doing research). The award-winning box (USA Today voted it the #1 lifestyle subscription box of 2020) is full of wonderfully wacky stuff, including items from indie artists.

As far as the “weird factor” goes, I’d categorize this more on the “slightly offbeat” side. In other words, it’s not too far out there.

• What you get in each box: 7-10 quirky items, including pens, stickers, pins, and even handbags.
• Frequency: Monthly
• Cost: $36+ a month

2. The Oddball Club

The name is actually styled in all lowercase (the oddball club), which in and of itself makes it a bit offbeat. Like the Quirky Crate, this one isn’t super weird, but it’s definitely fun for a zany friend.

I love that it’s cheap (as low as $20 a month for the micro oddball box) and that it features items from female artists. Plus, a portion of the proceeds go to Planned Parenthood to help protect reproductive health.

• What you get in each box:  4-10 fun offbeat gifts, including stickers, journals, candy and more
• Frequency: Monthly
• Cost: $20+ a month
• Options: Three sizes, including a micro, medium, and VIP-sized box.

3. Universe Bound Book Box

Moving beyond “a bit quirky” and into more surreal territory, we have the fantabulous Universe Bound Book Box. I am in love with everything about this one, from the indie-published diverse books to the intriguingly strange little snacks. Quite a few of the items are made by their in-house artisans, meaning you won’t find them anywhere else.

• What you get in each box: Depends on the box. You’ll always get at least one book. Other items include tea, mugs, snacks, and toys.
• Frequency: Monthly
• Cost: $18.33+ a month
• Options: Petite (just a book), Simple (a book and maybe tea, it’s unclear), Regular (books, snacks and other really nifty stuff), and Deluxe (all of the above, just more of it).

4. Monthly Earring Mania Box

While an earrings subscription box doesn’t sound all that weird in and of itself, the types of earrings that come in this one are definitely on the quirky side. It’s definitely not meant for people who take themselves too seriously!

Styles include everything from animals to food to wine bottles and even little nesting dolls. You’ll never, ever, ever get the same pair twice.

• What you get in each box: 2 new pairs of earrings plus other little goodies
• Frequency: Monthly
• Cost: $10+ a month
• Options: Choose from fishhook, dangle stud, or even clip-on earrings

5. Unboxing the Bizarre™

If you love weird and wacky “holidays,” then Unboxing the Bizarre is right up your freaky alley! It’s loaded with strange little novelty gifts around odd holidays that take place during that month. For example, one March box included a chihuahua cookie jar to celebrate Tamale Day, a panda mug for Panda Day, funky Ziploc bags for Pack Your Lunch Day, and more.

• What you get in each box: 4 novelty gifts plus trivia cards about the holidays
• Frequency: Monthly
• Cost: $34.96+ a month

6. Skulls Unlimited’s BoneBox

I hesitated to include this one because I was worried about how they got the bones. I am vehemently against the practice of killing animals just for human enjoyment or convenience (i.e. for their fur, to test makeup, or “hunting for sport”). According to Bone Box, the bones come from creatures who died natural deaths, in road accidents, or other ethical “we didn’t just kill them for their bones” means.

Now that we cleared that up, this still isn’t really something that I’d choose for myself, but you have to admit that it definitely fits into the “weird subscription boxes” category.

• What you get in each box: a mystery skull, collectible animal trading cards, an extra unique item and exclusive discounts

7. ForensiKit

If you’ve always wanted to play a CSI agent but don’t think you could handle being at an actual crime scene (I’d toss my cookies for sure), this one’s for you.

Each box comes with REAL forensic science gear that the experts use in the field. Past boxes have included things like fingerprinting kits, footprint casting, evidence photography kits, and more.

• What you get in each box: A real forensic kit, “evidence,” and a mystery to solve.
• Frequency: Monthly
• Cost: $39.99+ a month

8. Cryptid Crate Monthy Subscription Box 

The Cryptid Crate is perfect for anyone who believes in Bigfoot or just finds cryptozoology fascinating. I fall somewhere in the middle. While I’m not sure if I believe in Bigfoot and what not, I accept that we just don’t know exactly what is out there in this great big world of ours. Real or not, though, I do enjoy reading about weird creatures.

Per their description, “Expect a carefully curated package filled with creeptastic pieces from indie makers and artisans pertaining to bigfoot, sasquatch, UFOs, ghosts, and other cryptid and mysterious creatures.”

• What you get in each box: 4 to 7 items per box, including t-shirts, books, home decor, and more
• Frequency: Monthly
• Cost: $40+ a month

9. Bats & Bones Box

Unlike the previous box with “bone” in the title, this one doesn’t actually come with any animal remains. Instead, it’s packed full of wonderfully creepy items around a spooky theme. Past boxes include things like Carnival (carnivals definitely creep me out), Black Cats (not so spooky, but still cool), and Bloody Valentine.

This box sells out quite often, so if it’s not available right now, check back.

• What you get in each box: A “collection of home goods, décor, jewelry, stationary, bath/beauty, and candles” from small businesses.  
• Frequency: Monthly
• Cost: $30+ a month

10. Le Noir Bazaar Box

Le Noir Bazaar translates to the Dark Market (actually, “black market,” but that term’s etymology is dubious and even if it’s not rooted in racism it’s definitely has a fairly negative connotation). So, this box is filled with things you’d expect to find at an offbeat witchy flea market (which is my kind of bazaar).

• What you get in each box: 5-8, including jewelry, accessories, journals, pens, and other “Gothic Bohemian & Witchy goodies.”
• Frequency: Monthly
• Cost: It’s currently sold out, so I’m not sure, but on their website they sell them for about $45-50 a box.
